Forgetting Your Sunglasses is No Reason to Flip Out
You just made it through airport security after standing in line for an hour-and-a-half. As you pack your belongings back into your carry-on, it suddenly dawns on you that you left your sunglasses in the car. You are terrified by the prospect of spending 2 to 3 times as much purchasing a new pair of shades at an airport kiosk. What should you do?
First and foremost, don’t flip out. Forgetting your sunglasses is not the end of the world. Second, spend the time you’ll be sitting at the gate to think things through. There are actually a number of things you can do to overcome what is arguably a temporary setback.
Option #1: Live Without Your Shades
Your first option is to live without your shades for the week you’ll be on vacation. As bizarre as it sounds, it’s actually quite possible. Wearing sunglasses is not absolutely mandatory anywhere on the planet. Not only that, you are not going to develop melanoma, carcinoma, cataracts, or glaucoma because you go a week without sunglasses.
As a side note, did you know that our eyes need some exposure to natural sunlight? It’s true. Our bodies were designed to benefit from the sun. If you constantly cover your eyes and never expose them to natural light, you could be doing more harm than good. So live a little. Your eyes will be better off for the week.
Option #2: Buy a Cheap Pair
You could wait until you arrive at your destination and then buy a cheap pair of sunglasses at the local pharmacy or big-box department store. Just so long as you purchase dark lenses with a UV rating of 400, you will get all the eye protection you need at a reasonable price.
Believe it or not, you don’t have to spend $250 to get adequate eye protection. In fact, when you’re spending that much for sunglasses you are buying a brand. How do we know? Just look at a company like Olympic Eyewear. They currently offer more than two dozen designer brands that are every bit as good as big-name brands. Yet they cost a fraction of what you would pay for a Prada or Oakley.
Option #3: Just Wear a Hat
You may have left your sunglasses in the car, but you did bring a wide brimmed hat with you. You’re golden. The hat will do a sufficient job keeping the sun out of your eyes while you’re on vacation. As an added benefit, it will also protect you against heat- and sunstroke. Who needs a dark pair of wayfarers when you have an awesome hat that looks like something out of Raiders of the Lost Ark?
Option #4: Suck It up and Spend
If you cannot bear any of the first three options, you can always suck it up and go buy a pair at the airport kiosk. Know that you’re going to spend a lot more at the airport because you are a member of a captive audience, but the option is there if you must.
It is interesting how many of us rely so much on our sunglasses that getting on a plane without them can cause feelings of anxiety and fear. I guess that just goes to show the power of messaging. We have all heard for so long how damaging UV rays can be that we will not step foot outside the house without our shades. For better or worse, that’s just the way it is. Thank goodness there are so many options for buying a new pair whenever they are needed.
